VOLUNTEER ASSOCIATE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR & TECH DIRECTOR NEEDED

The Horizon Theatre is thrilled to announce our continued growth as we prepare for the 2026-2027 season! To help elevate our productions, expand our community impact, help lead the artistic and operational growth while supporting our mission to keep arts affordable and accessible, we are currently seeking passionate and dedicated theatre professionals for two pivotal leadership roles: Associate Artistic Director and Technical Director.

POSITION OVERVIEW: Associate Artistic Director

The Associate Artistic Director will work closely with the Executive Artistic Director, Technical Director, and Assistant Producer to shape and execute the artistic vision and operational efficiency of The Horizon Theatre.

 

This role is ideal for a creative leader who is passionate about storytelling, community engagement, and supporting local talent.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in season planning, play selection, and casting processes.

  • Overseeing and making sure theatre is compliant in securing rights, rental venues, and staffing. 

  • Collaborate with guest directors, designers, and performers to ensure high-quality artistic standards.

  • Help oversee educational programming, workshops, and community outreach initiatives.

  • Step in to direct productions or lead readings as needed throughout the season.

  • Assist with social media and marketing

  • Act as an ambassador for the theatre, fostering relationships with artists and patrons.

POSITION OVERVIEW: Technical Director

The Technical Director will work closely with the Executive Artistic Director, Associate Artistic Director, & Assistant Producer,  to shape and execute the artistic/technical vision and operational efficiency of The Horizon Theatre.oversee all technical and production aspects for The Horizon Theatre’s productions and special events. This role requires a hands-on problem solver with a strong background in theatrical design, safety, and crew management.

Key Responsibilities:

​

  • Manage and execute the technical needs for all productions, including set construction, lighting, sound, and rigging.

  • Oversee load-ins, technical rehearsals, and strikes for each show.

  • Maintain the theatre's technical equipment, tools, and backstage spaces to ensure a safe working environment.

  • Recruit, train, and manage volunteer technical crews and stage managers.

  • Collaborate closely with the artistic team and designers to bring their visions to life within budget and logistical constraints.

Compensation & Our Vision for Growth

At this time, like the Executive Artistic Director role, both the Associate Artistic Director and Technical Director are volunteer positions; however, we are committed to honoring your time and expertise. A mutually beneficial agreement will be established for both roles to receive a percentage of profits from all productions and events during the season.

The Bigger Picture: By bringing these two critical roles onto our leadership team, our Executive Artistic Director will be freed up to focus heavily on securing grants, sponsorships, and long-term financial resources. Our primary and immediate goal is to successfully transition both of these roles into a paid, salaried positions moving into the 2027-2028 season. This is a unique opportunity to get in on the ground floor, shape the future of the theatre, and grow with us!

  • Forward-thinking – you scan the environment to anticipate future needs and provide solutions to challenges. You are also attentive to the trends and preferences of audiences in the Houston area. You can provide guidance when selecting plays to both challenge and entertain our audience while encouraging growth.

  • Thrives on making connections: You are committed to being an ambassador for the Company OnStage as the face of the artistic side of the organization, and will help us engage new audiences, professional partners, participants, and supporters.

  • Open – you bring your authentic self to your work, and contribute to a positive, honest, and safe environment where people can connect and create.

 

What Is The Time Commitment?

  • Ideally we would like a 2-year term commitment and may serve as many consecutive terms as candidate likes.

  • Meet for monthly in person or zoom meetings, to provide ongoing reports about each production, the season, and planning for the upcoming season.

  • Spends an average of approximately 20-40 hours a month: attending meetings, overseeing productions, and being the face of the artistic side of the theatre.
